U.S. passports expire every ten years. In 2007, new requirements for U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and the Caribbean caused a big spike in passport applications and the Department of State had a large backlog of documents to process because some 30 million passports were issued within a two-year period.
The documents that caused the 2007 crisis are set to expire in the next two years, and combined with an increase in U.S. citizens with passports (125 million), an even bigger crisis is predicted in 2017. So to get ahead of the rush, the Department of State is recommending that citizens applying for a new passport or citizens who have a passport that is set to expire in 6 months or less send in their applications as soon as possible.

I personally don’t need it, but for the benefit of my clients should something detrimental happen to this document while they’re vacationing on foreign land, I will be just another reliable source of obtaining a copy should one be needed. It should be common place that now a days everyone keeps a copy of their passport at home, but what happens when the whole family goes on vacation and there’s no one home to retrieve that copy. You should be able to call on your agent. Also with updated passports on file, I can alert you ahead of time when your passport is about to expire so crises like this one coming will not negatively affect you. Of course, this service is provided as an option to my clients for the sole purpose of providing comfort and peace of mind. I know in these days we are very skeptical and leary about giving out our personal information because identity theft is so rampid. I know exactly how you feel but all we can do is weigh the odds, make sure we make good decisions, take precautions and continue to live our lives. I want to emphasize that you do not want to wait until next year to renew or obtain a brand new passport because it is almost guaranteed that the wait for the return of your passports will be much longer and possibly more stressful. You do not want to be in the midst of that madness especially when your cruise is approaching and you’re not in possession of your documents. Whether your vacation is by air or water, if you’re traveling out of the U.S. you will need a passport.
